Works with Alexa Certification Readiness Checklist
To prepare your product for the Works with Alexa (WWA) certification process, review the following guidelines and product readiness checklists.
Product readiness checklists
After you register your product with WWA, review the following checklists as you prepare to submit and follow your product through the certification process.
Before certification submission
Before you submit your product for WWA certification, review the following items:
- Submit devices for certification at least 30 days before product launch. If you're shipping a test device internationally, factor in additional time for shipping and customs delays.
- Your Alexa skill must receive skill certification before you submit your product for WWA certification.
- Submit a certification request after a production hardware and firmware are final. The WWA certification team doesn't accept prototype devices. All sample devices submitted for testing must be fully functional. Mobile apps can be side-loaded, but you must explicitly indicate this in your product submission.
- Complete self-testing of assigned WWA test plans before submission. You can find the relevant test plans on the Resources > Test Plans page on the Alexa certification console. Fix any failures that you discover during testing.
- For self-testing, use consumer-grade testing equipment, including basic routers, standard Amazon Echo devices (Echo Dot recommended), standard smartphones, common device accessories, such as bulb holders and plugs.
- Make sure that your contact information is up-to-date and accurate in the certification console. The WWA team contacts you at your registered email address for updates and questions about your product as it goes through the certification process.
- Verify that your device model number is consistent across all platforms and materials, including your product packaging, the certification console, Amazon retail site detail page, and any other online marketplaces where you plan to sell your product. Maintaining this consistency is essential for proper product identification and certification.
- Verify that your device capabilities are consistent between product packaging and the certification console.
- Print all special setup instructions on or inside your product packaging, and submit these instructions to the WWA team through the certification console.
After certification submission
After you submit your product for WWA certification, follow these guidelines to ship your product to the testing facility.
- After the WWA certification team receives your certification request, they send you an outreach email, including device shipment details or remote testing options when applicable. Configure your email settings to accept messages from WWA-Certification-Testing-Team@amazon.com. Respond to this email within 10 business days.
- Ship two sample devices in their final packaging to the address specified in the email. The testing facility needs two devices in case the primary device malfunctions during testing.
- Include all peripheral materials needed to test your device. For example, If your device can't plug into a standard outlet, include all necessary wiring modules or special setup components with your shipment
- If your product is a hub that Alexa can't control directly, include the endpoint devices along with the hub.
- After you ship the product, provide the tracking number to the WWA certification team so that the team can track the package.
- If you booked a remote test session with the WWA certification team, provide a 72-hour notice for cancellations.
- If your product qualifies for virtual testing, have two sample devices available for the session. Also, make sure that you have standard office equipment and high-speed internet available during the session.
After you ship your device to the testing facility
After you ship your product to the testing facility, stay engaged during the certification process. Monitor your contact email during certification testing. When the certification team contacts you about your in-progress certification, to avoid delays, respond within five business days.
Allow 10 business days after receipt of your product for the certification team to complete testing. This timeline might extend if the team needs additional information to complete testing.
You can track the status of your certification request on the Certification page in the STATUS column. When the status changes, the WWA certification team notifies you by email.
Common certification rejection reasons
If your product experiences any of the following issues during testing, the WWA team rejects your certification request.
- A single test case failure in certification submission.
- Providing pre-production hardware, firmware, or skills in device samples, or submitting non-functional devices.
- Mismatched model numbers across platforms and materials.
- Mismatched product capabilities between packaging and the certification console.
- Missing your scheduled remote testing session without advance notice.
If you feel the rejection was in error, contact the WWA certification team for review. Provide login credentials and self-test videos that show device behavior. The WWA team reviews these materials to assess your product and verify the test results.
Resubmit a failed certification
Before you resubmit your product after a failed certification, fix all issues discovered during certification testing and confirm the fix through self-testing. To create a new iteration of your certification request, choose re-test on your certification request form.
To avoid delay in the certification process, review the following guidelines for resubmissions:
- Don't submit a retest request until you fix and verify all issues.
- Use your existing product and certification request. Don't create a new request.
- Submit the re-test request and wait for the results. Don't resubmit the same request multiple times
